THEY SPENT THE NEXT two days carrying on like a couple of honeymooners, doing little besides eating, sleeping, and having sex. Jory swore his essence was addictive, because the more she had, the more she wanted. She seemed to have a similar effect on him, but he had a bit more self-control.

Zandar refused to let them stay in bed the entire time. Instead, he focused some of their attention on preparing for survival, both inside and out of the ship. He scouted the exterior of the planet one morning, discovering there was enough oxygen in the planet’s atmosphere to meet both their needs. He also inventoried their supplies and insisted they organize them and prepare bug-out packs.

On the third evening after he had awakened from his pseudo-coma, the shrill alarm started again. This time, it didn’t stop after a few minutes. Instead, the volume escalated and continued without pause.

She didn’t have to ask what it meant, and she hurried to find her clothes. Her panties were a completely lost cause, and she dreaded the idea of wearing the skirt and jacket, but she shoved it into the pack Zandar had helped her prepare two days before. “I’m scared,” she said softly as she slipped on the skirt over her camisole.

“I know, but I’ll do my best to keep you safe.” He passed her a section of bandage.

She took it and started to put it in her pack, assuming he wanted a first-aid kit, though she’d sworn he’d already packed that in his heavier bag. His hand on hers had her pausing, and she looked up at him with a question in her eyes.

“Wrap it around your feet. Your shoes are useless, and the bandage will adhere to your skin for at least a few days.”

She nodded, fashioning a clumsy pair of makeshift shoes from the strange bandage material. Once it formed to her feet, the bumps seemed to smooth out, and she groaned with pleasure. “My god, I’m going to reverse engineer this stuff, patent it, and run Dr. Scholl’s out of business when I get back to Earth.”

He laughed softly. “I understood a bit of that, Jory—enough to know it will be beyond your capabilities.”

She rolled her eyes, allowing him to distract her from her fear as they collected a few more necessities while moving through the broken ship. “Yes, I know. Earthlings are primitive.”

Zandar laughed again. “Somewhat, but I meant you specifically. You can’t program your hopping device, so how can you reverse engineer something?”

Her smartass retort disappeared as they neared a wide opening in the ship. This would clearly be their escape hatch. “Do we really have to do this, Zandar?”

He took her hand, squeezing reassuringly. “I’m afraid we must.”

She had the craziest urge to tell him she loved him, though that couldn’t be true. She barely knew Zandar beyond a physical level. It had to be fear and the passionate closeness they had indulged in the past few days. Instead, she settled for squeezing his hand and taking a step with him out of the ship and onto the planet.
